Certification in Evidence-Based Pediatrics
Practicing modern pediatrics means navigating a rapidly-changing landscape in which parents and practitioners alike are demanding safer and more effective solutions to childhood concerns. Conventional approaches, which rely heavily–if not exclusively–on pharmaceutical drugs, are no longer acceptable in the face of evidence clearly outlining these dangers of this approach.
Children have long been the largest consumers of drugs such as antibiotics, and the long term side effects of this pharmaceutical-forward approach are making themselves known. Yet, gentle, more effective solutions are not taught in medical school or most CE programs.
That's why the Evidence Based Integrative Pediatrics program exists. This program provides the tools you weren't given in school, and guides you as you navigate successfully creating an integrative practice. You'll gain the latest scientific information from one of the world's leading natural health researchers who specializes in clinical trials on underserved populations–such as children and pregnant women.
If you are a pediatrician, pediatric nurse, child development specialist, or any other healthcare specialist who works with children, this program will empower you to take a more kid-friendly, evidence-informed approach to supporting the health of the children in your care.
This professional certification program includes 12 modules of asynchronous learning with Dr. Jessie Hawkins. Each module includes 3-5 hours of learning, including a LIVE 60 minute session each week at 2pm on Mondays (CST).
Sessions are delivered weekly from Mar 17 to June 6, with a mid-point break the week of April 27.

The program begins assessing the intersection between natural medicine and scientific evidence–establishing the role of integrative health in a modern medical practice.
During this week, we'll address challenges with the self-administration nature of nutraceuticals, socioeconomic factors that play a role in holistic wellbeing and associated outcomes, determinants of health, and the role of familial culture and belief in pediatrics.
Boosting immunity is a core foundation of integrative medicine. This module looks at how to safely and effectively guide parents and young patients through holistic preventive techniques. Topics also include the nature of holistic prevention–with the goal of achieving wellness within the person as a whole, not merely achieving a disease-free state.
Additionally, children in the 2020s are bombarded with a plethora of new and untested environmental agents. This module addresses not only common environmental concerns, but also how to talk with overwhelmed parents about prioritizing environmental changes to create workable and effective action steps.
With 24/7 global news sources and social media, awareness of infectious disease has never been greater, and the COVID-19 pandemic only emphasized the importance of understanding and applying epidemiological and research skills.
In this module, you'll take a crash course in epidemiology and health research, covering topics such as the natural history of disease, chain of infection, modes of transmission, epidemic patterns, and core measures of association (eg risk ratio, relative risk, and others).
The use of essential oils for child health is full of controversy, but this powerful tool shouldn't be ignored. In this module, you'll learn about the three methods of exposure for EOs (inhalation, topical application, and ingestion), and how to determine which route is ideal for each patient's unique needs.
Topics also include: olfactory development, dermal and intestinal microbiomes, dosing and dispensing, formulation, and the role child development plays in aromatic medicine.
Most natural supplements available OTC in the US and other developed nations are formulated using botanicals and/or nutraceutical ingredients. This module looks at the herb-drug spectrum, the regulation of natural products and associated claims regarding efficacy, contraindications associated with nutraceuticals and pediatrics, and more.
You'll also learn how to identify safe, affordable, and trustworthy brands and how to guide your patients away from potentially adulterated or dangerous formulations.
In this module, we transition from scientific foundation to clinical practice. You'll gain valuable insight (including epidemiology, prevention, complications and tertiary prevention, treatments with evidence based protocols, integrative prognosis, and the prevention and treatment of sequelae) into routine concerns such as otitis media, warts, common cold, pink eye, lice, and more. Many topics covered also one or more patient handouts and easy-to-apply protocols you can begin using right away.
This module covers the development of the microbiome during early childhood and throughout the early years.
You'll learn how key microbiomes are populated, how diet and medications influence this process, how to measure and assess the pediatric microbiome, and how to utilize prebiotics and probiotics to enhance the treatment of many chronic conditions.
Continuing with the clinical application portion of the course, this module transitions into respiratory related complaints and conditions. Ranging from the common cold to COVID-19, and everything in-between, you'll enjoy practical protocols you can utilize and how to empower your patients to achieve wellness before their condition advances to something more serious.
You'll also enjoy a complete workshop providing exclusive (pre-publication) access to NRI's Elderberry Study–the world's largest study ever conducted on this widely popular ingredient.
The digestion and elimination module continues with the clinical application portion of the course, with protocols and handouts for a range of gastrointestinal complaints, including treatments for nonspecific symptoms such as nausea, as well as solutions for infectious agents.
This module also includes pediatric nutritional topics to empower you as you guide parents through the chaos and confusion of pediatric nutrition, including topics such as fad diets, the role of fats, carbs, and proteins in the developing child, and risk factors that lead to eating disorders.
In the dermatology module, we build upon the dermal microbiome topics outlined previously and identify safe and effective methods to address routine childhood skin conditions while preserving and even supporting the dermal microbiome. Conditions range from teen acne to infantile eczema and everything in between.
Today's children are bombarded with both internal and external stressors at nearly every turn. Stress has been directly linked to nearly every leading cause of death in the developed world and a wide range of chronic conditions. Addressing behavioral and emotional health not only improves an entire family's quality of life, it plays a direct role in a child's future health status.
Topics include: depression, anxiety, grief, abuse, neglect, childhood discrimination, separation, and other adverse childhood experiences, with holistic protocols and educational materials for both prevention and mitigation of lifelong effects.
Pediatric pain management is a complex and complicated topic. While there are known risks associated with pharmaceutical pain management and opioid addiction, OTC pain management carries its own set of threats to physical and emotional wellbeing.
Fortunately, botanicals deliver a wide range of pain-reducing options without risks of addiction and without the long-term organ damage identified in routine use of NSAIDs.
This module outlines multiple approaches to pain relief, including psychological tools as well as topical and ingested solutions–some of which parents can formulate at home with your guidance.
In this BONUS module, we tackle the challenges associated with the ever-present battle between humankind and the microbial world. An overwhelming majority of children are exposed to antibiotics within the first two years of life, yet studies repeatedly confirm that such exposures are directly associated with dramatic increases in chronic conditions such as asthma, allergies, ADHD, obesity, and eczema.
Not only does this widespread abuse of the drug directly harm pediatric populations, it leads to antibiotic resistance in the microbial world, bringing us closer to a post-antibiotic era.
This module provides a safer, more effective approach to widespread antibiotic abuse, with natural tools that protect the body while bringing about healing.

All handouts and recordings are delivered during or immediately after the LIVE class. Course materials are not housed online for on-demand delivery after the course ends. It is your responsibility to download all materials during/after the class and save a copy on your hard drive.
You can! You will have download rights for personal use only. Each video, handout, lecture, or other resource will be downloadable so it is yours to keep!
We recommend storing a back-up copy of the downloads in case of an emergency. Unfortunately, we do not store these files online and are unable to deliver course materials after the course is over.
After you have participated in all modules, there is a single quiz at the end of the course which assesses mastery. This course contains True/False questions, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions. The questions are application-focused so they assess mastery, not memorization.
